Nothing is more spectacular than
nature. Artists can only attempt to suggest its wonder and magnificence.
To me, to try is joyful. The way light and atmospheric conditions
play on land, trees, buildings, and water thrills me. To capture
some of its beauty and sense of mystery is my passion.
I love painting outdoors, where I can experience nature directly.
The possibilities for subject matter seem endless and inspiring.
Painting in nature is the best classroom I know and is my foundation
for later interpretations in the studio.
I find the studio a relaxed and creative environment. There
I may complete a painting I began on location, experiment, use
my photos as a starting point, or create a work from my imagination.
California, rich with deserts, seacoast, forests, and mountains,
provides endless material for fresh air painting. I draw special
inspiration from occasional painting trips, most recently to
Arizona’s White Mountains, southern France and Hawaii.
Before beginning a painting, I envision my ideal end result.
This includes the painting medium. Oil and acrylic are my mediums
of choice. I occasionally paint in watercolor when the subject
seems to call for it.
